I stood in front of the mirror and admired my Dixie dress for the afternoon. I let Goody not only pick out my winter-white a-line dress with a portrait collar, but I also let her do my hair in finger waves. When she started out with the famous Southern combover, I thought I would have to object, but it looked good.
I was the portrait of Southern sweet—pearls, pink cheeks, and a passion-fruit-pink lip.
Geoffrey had called me to explain the Greek Tea politics and social climate.
“Because I haven’t dated anyone else, it translates to adding another couple to the coupling for the Betas and the Kittys. So, I apologize for the cart being put before the horse, Ryan, but would you do me the great honor of joining me at the Greek Tea?”
We managed to cram eight sisters into one car for the four p.m. tea. All eight of us left the car as soon as we got to the art building so we could try not to crease our dresses as we waited outside the building for Morgan to grab a project—in the freezing cold. We were a sight—a bunch of debutantes in tea-party-wear hopping around to stay warm next to dumpsters.
Some sisters started giggling, and I heard one say, “So hot and dirty from workin’ with his hands.”
“I have a feelin’ he’s sexy clean, too,” said another.
Of course, all seven of us turned to look at whom they were talking so loudly-enough-for-him-to-hear about, and my heart stopped.
I ducked my head and hid behind the girls, turning toward the garbage.
“Oh, hey, sexy,” Savannah catcalled, and the other girls giggled again.
“Hey, Manny,” Goody called out and spun me around to give me the eye.
I walked out from behind the other girls toward Manny like I was sentenced to a walk of shame. I refused to look back at the girls behind me, so I looked up to see the expression on Manny’s unreadable face.
There was nothing appropriate to say when seeing the ex-boyfriend you haven’t seen in over two months—the ex-boyfriend that you’re in love with and trying to convince you haven’t changed because of a sorority while standing in a giggly group of Southern belles and wearing something your mom’s mom may have worn while she was in college.
“So, are you guys for real?” Manny asked.
“Oh, we’re for real. And headed to afternoon tea, no less.” I tried to smile. I couldn’t believe how impossibly dumb the words out of my mouth sounded.
“So, why did you bring the party up here?” he asked.
“I’m not here to see you.”
The look on his face gashed me.
I always wanted to see him—every day, all day, everywhere, all the time. I tried to explain. “Morgan. Morgan, um ...”
“What about me?” Morgan appeared beside me, balancing her model bridge in one hand away from her dress. “Manny! Great to see you.” She started to hug him with her free arm, but he backed away.
“I don’t want to get clay and dust on your tea-party frock.”
“Good call,” she said back.
